Deadpool Review
Let's get this straight, Deadpool is not a superhero. The movie may count as a superhero film because it has a main character with superhuman abilities and takes place in a world of other superheroes but he is not a superhero, for the simple fact that he is not a hero.
In a world where we can get the lovable ridiculousness of Guardians of the Galaxy or the serious, well-executed movies like Captain America The Winter Soldier and The Dark Knight the space for any kind of Superhero movie seems to be completely filled. This movie is here to fill the seat of the wise-ass and the lack any semblance of inhibition.
Basically, Deadpool was originally a mercenary named Wade Wilson. He did his time fighting and killing overseas. Now he's part of some kind of club where they take out/intimidate people for a fee. This is OK, at least to him, because though he may be a self-proclaimed asshole he is inflicting death, torture and general unpleasantness on worse assholes. While kicking it back with his bartender friend Weasel (T.J. Miller) he encounters the feisty Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), they kick-off their relationship by trying to top each-other with who has the more traumatic upbringing. They live a happy life for a few years when Wade suddenly gets diagnosed with multiple cancers. He leaves his girl to go for treatment, the one who treats him is Ajax (Ed Skrein) whose real name is Francis. This leads to him gaining super-human-abilities but also becoming horribly disfigured. Therefore he takes-up the name Deadpool and goes on a crazed, murderous rampage.
The method for how the movie unfolds is actually to interweave the origin story throughout the plot. This is a refreshing take on how to unfold a plot within a superhero film.
Having an anti-hero as a protagonist is one thing, having a villain as the main character can also be interesting. The movie has a very narrow road to walk. Deadpool is a killer, he even enjoys killing and commits many violent horrific acts while working humor into it. This can turn sick very quickly. Firstly it is clearly not grounded in reality, there is levity, he doesn't kill innocent people he kills those who are (according to him) even worse than he is and they do work in turmoil for him. To have budbahasa ambiguity is tricky, there needs to be a conflict and if there is no clear answer then the movie needs to properly convey that this is a world or situation where there are not truly happy endings.
Deadpool himself is a character that has a mouth, one of the most distinguished mouths in all of pop-culture. He has weapon skills, enhanced agility, reflexes and a healing factor. So he can be shot, cut-up into pieces and still bust out the very colorful one-liners. On and on he will go throughout the movie with his witty repartee. Ryan Reynolds ignites the character with energetic vocal delivery and playfully bouncy body movement. He was the right choice for this character, plain and simple.
Due to his deformity, Deadpool's costume covers his entire face and has white eye-pieces. The white eye-pieces are something that we have never seen be brought to live action, even though they are C.G.I. before they only existed in the realm of comics and animation. As well as that all the colors are correct, everything is where it should be and they got the right fabric to make it believable in a real world. So much so this might be the best translation from page to screen of a character's costume.
For whatever reasons within the film, Deadpool is able to break the fourth wall and acknowledge the audience and the actors within the movies that play other characters. There is a scene where he flicks some gum in the camera lens, another where he asks for confirmation on who is playing Professor Xavier. There are even moments when they acknowledge the terrible rendition of Deadpool in Wolverine Origins and Reynolds first venture into superhero genre with Green Lantern. This makes the movie a little hard to truly criticize because it's already aware a lot of its faults and uses them for more comedy.
Let's not kid ourselves this is stupid and juvenile. But the question that must be asked is that is this well executed? Does it have some charm? Well, it is shallow, no doubt. But it is so comfortable and creatively shallow. It knows what it is, it has a main character that is not interested in being morally righteous but all his victims are the right ones. It is raunchy, gory fun that will surprise you all with how creatively raunchy and gory it is.
