While We're Young Review
Noah Baumbach makes movies about characters that deal with their struggles like real people. To hell with the how your suppose to feel about it or if you are no satisfied or even if it ends in the right place.
We have a couple of a good handful of years in Josh (Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (Naomi Watts). The two have another married couple as friends that have just had a baby and they can never resist the urge to talk about their new child or the question "When are you gonna have yours?" They have attempted to have a baby a few times but all have been unsuccessful, but its OK because it grants them all kinds of freedom, like going on a spontaneous vacation, but they should probably get permission to get off work, and as Cornelia says "A month is still in the realm of spontaneity."
Josh is a lecturer at a University, he has made one documentary and his latest project has taken him eight years to make, but he is nearing the finishing point, so he says. It isn't until that a young couple sit in on Josh's lecture and invite show immense interest him that things get shaken up.
The younger couple are Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). They are spontaneous and are into the older things in life, i.e. vinyl records, VHS tapes. They also make everything from the desk they write on, the wine they drink and the ice-cream they eat.
Baumbach movies always come with poignant characters and truths that you can never deny. The facts of that when you become older you loose the spark that being youthful afforded and when your young you can be nobody's worst enemy except yourself. His movies are also very funny. I have seen my share of hilarious images in movies, cowboys punching show-dancers, another cowboy riding a nuclear bomb, terrorists dressed as marathon mascots. But few things compare the the hauntingly hilarious image of Naomi Watts break dancing.
True that this movie is non-linear and seems to be playing at its own passe, but when you have seen so many movies that is a delight in whatever form it comes in. That can still be bad and there are plenty of examples of that being the sinking point, but this is a movie where the characters lead the charge of the plot and the twists and turns.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 4
