Top Ten Movies Of 2017

2017 like its predecessor was a year that was rife with political and other difficulties but very rich in movies. Such difficulties should not go unaddressed but they are not what we are here to talk about.

The winner, or loser, for the worst movie of the year goes to American Assassin.

I want to also take a moment for Honorable Mentions. La La Land and Your Name were two phenomenal movies that would be on this list but due to technically being released last year don't make it. But it would be remiss if they didn't get any recognition so here it is.

10. Professor Marston & The Wonder Women. As much as I enjoyed Wonder Woman this was a movie that was even braver to take the true story of the superheroes inception and portray this unconventional relationship for all to see.

9. War for the Planet of the Apes. One of the most surprisingly high standard movie franchise to come out in recent years reaches it's conclusion. With striking images, engaging situations that reveal the good and evil on both sides and amazing visual effects to realize it all this is a movie that works on a deeper level than a shoot 'em and blow them up blockbuster.

8. A Cure For Wellness. Though I am not blind to its flaws, it goes on too long and the overall plot making no sense still I couldn't deny that I was hooked while watching it ad haunted by it afterwards. Such a wealth of new, rich images and moments that make it stand out as one of the most bountiful experiences I've had in seeing movies this year. It doesn't make literal sense, it makes lyrical sense.

7. Get Out. A tight, bold movie that takes the horror genre in a very uncomfortable but also truthful direction. A rock bottom budget is made up for with a clear vision, actors that are all on-point and ideas that strike deep into your nature.

6. Blade Runner 2049. One of the most acclaimed and recognisable movies of all-time gets a sequel thirty years later. This could have gone so very wrong. But instead what we got was a continuation, not a repeat of the movie with some of the most beautiful visuals that will probably make it last just as long as the first.

5. Logan. Though there were a few Superhero movies I enjoyed quite a lot this year Logan is the one to make the top list because it has done something incredible for the genre. It ended. It is built on the legacy of nearly twenty years of movies, there were real stakes and it wasn't a perfect, happy ending. With an ending comes shape and form to the whole

4. Kong Skull Island. This is a B movie concept but executed like an A movie. It takes its abstrak concept and revels in infusing it with so much passion to make it as biblical and as fun as possible. It is not the reinvention, but the perfection of the genre. Which then climaxes in what is probably one of (if not the) greatest monster brawl in movie history.

3. Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi. One of the biggest franchises of all time must continue to truly stay alive. It takes what has been established for year and removes some while keeping the truly precious and goes forward to a new place. I not only was entertained but I was reminded what this franchise is and connected with it more strongly than any of my other experiences with it.

2. Baby Driver. Of all the really good franchise movies that have come out this year and have been released in the last few there will always be a pace for original movies. They are the lifeblood of the medium that keeps it interesting and the watchers interested. This movie sough to be itself, to tell it's story with characters that are not taken from any other source material and through a visual style that comes from an original working the medium the way they want to. Nothing was wasted in this effort of love, that takes almost everything that a movie can be and perfectly bakes it all together in a magnificent whole.

1. A Monster Calls. I saw this movie early on in the year, almost as soon as I walked out of the cinema I said "This is the best movie of the year. If a better movie comes out, it isn't real." Whilst many other movies came out that rose quickly to the higher points on my list this position for A Monster Calls was unshakable. It simultaneously invests me in the story being told and educates me on why we need stories in general. To educate and nourish us, it teach us lessons.
