Top Ten Best Movies Of 2016

It has been a...trying year.

It will be remembered as the year a obscene amount of  entertainers died and unfavorable political choices were made. I have to admit though, if this year was just focused on movies it would be considered a big success. But we can't just focus on that aspect of life.

However it is movies that is the main focus of this blog and what I am here to talk about. So let us waist no more time.

10. Doctor Strange. Though its pot and way of unfolding is nothing new but through it's visuals it delivers something truly creative and brilliant in the world of Superheroes. Movies are a visual art-form and this movie thrives in creating mind-bending, trippy visuals.

9 . Moana. Disney doing what Disney does best and doing it quite well. Songs, laughs, action and not just with a bunch of Caucasian people.

8 . The Neon Demon. Nicholson Winding Refun continues be be one of the most experimental filmmakers working today. With his minimal plot and rich visuals and dark tones he delivers movies that may no always work but are certainly the most interesting to experience.

7 . The Accountant. Something that could have fallen so flat, but with some extra effort and brains behind it it became a truly engaging action movie that is more confident than we've seen before.

6 . Arrival. A science fiction movie that takes it back to ideas and philosophies. It has an idea and it build on it and tests it and never falls back on becoming a shoot-em-up action movie. This is something for you to think about, to walk away thinking about.

5 . Kubo of the Two Strings. An adventure movie with so much to it. So many visuals and ideas and scale to this big quest. And absolutely everything you see on-screen has been planned and constructed and painted and then moved, one frame at a time to bring to to life. It is a movie that demands you do not blink.

4 . Ethel & Ernest. Such a humble animated movie about two people loving each-other through history. That's all we get and that's all we need. Charm and truth power this movie into greatness and reminds us everyone has a story.

3 . Zootropolis. Disney doing what Disney doesn't do best. A dark crimes mystery that also has social undertones. Disney straying so far from what they do could have easily ended in disaster (like other times), but here they oddly flourish in this realm of clues and metaphorical prejudices. A movie that is many things and succeeds on all of them.

2 . Captain America: Civil War. This movie has so much to do. So many characters and things to address from previous films and characters to introduce as well as set-up what will follow. This should be a mess, and yet it all harmonizes like a glorious symphony.

1 . Kung Fu Panda 3. What is happening that not one, but two movies that are the third part of their franchise are in my top ten list. Let alone take the top two places? I'm as surprised as anyone else. But lo-and-behold here we are. Kung Fu Panda 3 is a movie where it crackles with imagination, beauty and fun. Everything about it had me smiling and engaged. Though this is said a lot, the filmmakers are clearly having fun and fun is the great driving force that makes life bearable. They infuse every bit of this movie with their passion to make it as great as it can be and it indeed is.
