Snow White And The Huntsman Review

Ever since Walt Disney made the first full length animated feature film Snow White has been associated to the look and the feel of the 1938 classic, cuteness and all. Now this new film has arrived to put the old film in its place.

I grew up watching Snow White like i'm sure most kids did. It was well animated, fun and played more to the audience heart than it did their brain.  One of the first things I saw of Snow White and the Huntsman was Katolik Stewart wearing Armour and holding a sword and shield, needless to say I was intrigued.

Snow White and the Huntsman may fall into some all to obvious cliques but the visuals and the unique twists and ideas it puts forward are more than enough to make this one ride that will not be forgotten.

The story follows the original Grimm fairy tale faithfully but allows itself some unique liberties that distinguish itself from the other interpretations of this old story.  We have the innocent girl, we have the lost mother and the evil stepmother who kills the king as so forth but they are played straight and with passion for the source material.

Katolik Stewart plays Snow White and she does a more than solid job,  she looks the part and carries herself well through this story.  Stewart has received much hate from some people for her performance as Bella in the infamous Twilight movies, I always attributed her performance to bad writing and bad directing rather than her being a bad actress.  I've always seen good potential in her and this movie clarifies my suspicions, she is a capable actor who has real chops.  The main merit is that she has rather little obrolan in the movie and most of it relies on her screen presence, which is good.

This is one of the best looking movies that I have ever seen, it is true to the original Grimm vision of this story but also adds unique visuals that the story allows it.  The dark forest has never been so dark with black burned out trees.  The enchanted forest is so bright and luscious with so many touches that would stagger the unimaginative.  A bridge troll that is actually the bridge and looks like something out of Guillermo Del Toro's Pans Labyrinth. The visual feast that this movie offers is like none available out right now and is worth the ticket price alone.

One of the most unique aspects of the movie that I enjoyed where its subtle hits to the idea that maybe the magical elements aren't what they appear.  Is the magic mirror real or is it just the Queens madness?  Is the dark forest haunted or are there just toxic flowers that cause those who enter suffer from dangerous hallucinations? Ow there is magic in this world to be sure but still it offers a fresh perspective on old formulas.

The Disney movie back in 1938 gave us princess who had to be saved and surrounded her with interesting characters.  Now we have a movie that has Snow White taking up sword and shield and fighting back, this Snow White is now push over.  Watch out Cinderella and Rapunzel here comes a whole new kind of fairy tale princess.
