Jurassic World Review
Why would anybody, with the previous history of this park known create an even bigger badder hybrid that is sure to cause disaster?
In this continuity since the events of Jurassic Park people have gotten the park under control again and everything is now running smoothly by Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard). Gary (Ty Simpkins) and Zack (Nick Robinson) are her nephews that get special access to the park. They wonder around and have friction being siblings of two different ages, or just because their siblings.
Not to discredit the actors (certainly not), but whenever they were on-screen I questioned why they needed to be in the movie. They weren't particularly interesting or even unique characters, they were just here to be children in danger. Why? Because that's what the last movie had perhaps?
But at the park (which is very costly as you'd expect) they need to come-up with more than just dinosaurs. So they have created a new creature from mixing and matching other dinosaurs and animals into one colossal killing machine. This movie takes place in the same continuity as the first one. So why I ask, why would any half sane being create a creature like that knowing that this park has a record of plunging into chaos.
This movies C.G.I. on a less high-profile film or even a movie with a weaker budget could get away with having some less that truly exceptional effects, but this is neither. The name Jurassic Park carries weight, especially in the world of visual effects. The environments and dinosaurs themselves are not particularly well rendered, ultimately being unconvincing and distracting. Something that I did notice (which is admirable), is that at times they actually used animatronic heads for some of the close-up interactions scenes. I thought that was a dead art-form and was very much appreciated by me. Those puppet heads will definitely age better than their C.G.I.
One of the new Park staff members is a man named Owen (Chris Pratt), that is a trainer of raptors. He works with them and builds a relationship. But he never forgets the score, that there is predator and prey and lines that man should never cross.
Pratt really is the best thing about the movie. He seems to be channeling his Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy, he convincingly interacts with the unconvincing dinosaurs and carries himself like a man that knows his limitation but also an air of confidence. And while it seems his main job is to dramatically stare while the camera pans towards him and speak lines that will be put in the trailer and/or the poster he still does it well.
If you are fairly well versed is these kinds of movies you can rather easily predict who will live to star in the sequel and who will provide dinner for the dinosaurs.
The first Jurassic Park movie was by no means flawless and had some pretty big plot-holes. But we were able to ignore or ride over them very easily because it engaged us in the awe that the movie had over its dinosaurs and its commitment to the plot and fun. This movie does not-so-much have that, it is still a fun movie with good performances and cute ideas.
As a movie watcher I will of course take-up the opportunity to go and see Jurassic World. If I was a character in the world of this movie movie I would say "Hell no! Its gonna go bad, it always goes bad."
