Iron Man 3 Review

...This isn't suppose to happen. A superhero trilogy isn't supposed to exist where the third movie is the best out of them all.  Iron Man three is the best out of all the Iron Man movies, but none would predicted this back in two-thousand and eight when the first Iron Man movie came out, then we thought we knew the rules, first movie can be good or very good, second has a chance at being as good or even better, but the third would definitely be the worst.

The plot this time revolves around a new, super serum, lets call it, named Extremis, based on the Warren Ellis comic (no I haven't read it...yet) that is able to super enhance the human body. Along with all this Tony Stark himself seems to be suffering form post traumatic stress disorder from coming a little too close to death for his comfort. He also has developed a new technology where he can remote control his whole suit or even the little individual parts of it, this has so many possibilities and I think they use all of them.

Shane Black takes over as the writer and director for this movie. Black is famous for writing the Lethal Weapon movies at the humble age of twenty three. He made a comeback with his directing debut with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (no I haven't seen it...yet) that also stared Robert Downey Jr. only thing is not a lot of people saw that movie. Now he's been given a second chance with this movie, unlike in the second movie Black shows restraint with the obrolan and the one liners, which was the main persoalan with the second movie. He also doesn't strike me as an action director, but also but low and behold he does a great job with the action here. The imagination and the great execution with Tony controlling the different parts of his armor.

But the real strength that comes out of having Black as writer/director is the fact that he now has access to his golden goose, Robert Downey Jr. Black has stated and everyone else thinks that there is nobody more perfect to read his obrolan than Downey and so I feel the start of one of the great director actor partnerships.

The villain this time is the power mad terrorist The Mandarin, played by Ben Kinsley, who has real love for savoring each syllable he says. If you've seen Gandhi then you wouldn't think that Kinsley could pull-off being a villain, but for those of us that have seen Sexy Beast then we know full well what a bastard he can be. I have a little persoalan with having terrorists in superhero movies, I just think that they strike a little too close to home for comfort. The Mandarin is more of the intelligent villains that challenges Tony's wits and resources rather than seeing who can make the biggest canon.

Along with the main characters we also get extra development with the supporting characters. Pepper Pots (Gweneth Paltrow) is now fully in  a relationship with Tony Stark and how she has to deal with his and his obsessions as well as his newly acquired emotional baggage. Col James Rhodes who took up the helm of The War Machine in the second movie is now The Iron Patriot (When I first saw him in the trailer I thought Tony made Captain America a suit).

This is definitely the darkest out of all the Iron Man movies with Tony and his massive ego being shaken to its core and having so much of what was built up before being sent straight to hell. It does everything that a good sequel should, expands the scope, expands the action and the characters. Marvel phase two has begun and its looking really, really good. Bring on Thor two.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 4

Note: Just like in the other Marvel movies this has a little clip at the end of the credits, this has one too. However this one is just for a laugh, if your a hardcore Marvel movie fan then stay at the end of the credits but if your less inclined then just wait for the DVD.
