Ender Game Not Review
For those of you that think that this is a movie review, it is not. By all means keep reading but you need to know that first.
I have always considered this blog an extension of myself. My thoughts, my feeling and beliefs. So this is why I am making this post, in order to properly express my opinion on this matter.
The movie that is currently under discussion is Enders Game, based on the popular novel by Orson Scott Card. From what I can gather the book has a unique premiss and is well executed, that is good to know but however I will not be watching the movie, why? Because Orson Scott Card is against gay marriage. So for me as someone who supports gay marriage I cannot go and see the movie.
My friends made a good point while I was talking about this with them, they asked me "what if you didn't know this about the the movie?" that is an excellent point. Say I didn't know this and I saw the movie, I liked the movie and never learned that about Scott Cards beliefs? Well simply put that would mean that ignorance really is bliss. However if I saw the movie then learned about Scott Card then it would be severely bitter the movie to me, I dont think I would be able to see the movie in the same light after learning what I have about the creator of the material.
To those people that think that I am trying to discourage people from seeing the movie, I am not. Yeah that's right, I'm not one of those people, I believe in the first amendment. Freedom of speech. Orson Scott Card has the right to believe what he wants, say what he believes in and of coarse give money to a cause that he believes in. Ergo so do I and I am saying that I cannot go to the movie and enjoy the movie knowing the kind of man that fueled the creation of the source material. It is my duduk masalah and nobody else.
Here is a talk with popular comic book artist Phil Jimenez, famous comic book writer Mark Waid and friends. Here they have a great talk about the Scott Card controversy and how they feel about it. It is a good talk with smart interesting people.
Will I ever see the movie and/or read the book? Well never say never, from what I understand there is no anti gay content within either the book or in the movie so perhaps one day. But I still dont think I will be able to detach myself from from the man that has created it. Again this is my duduk masalah nobody else. It is a case of me not being able to separate the art form the artist.
Still however, I have learned that it doesn't matter how well the movie does because Scott Card has already been given his Producers paycheck. So it doesn't matter how well the movie does Scott Card has had his payday and that's that.
To those of you that wont see the movie because it doesn't appeal to you, fair enough. For the people that will see the movie because it either does appeal to you or you love the source material, God speed, I hope you have a good time. For the people that were thinking of seeing it but now know what they know about the author of the material, make up your own mind. And the people that wont see it for the same reasons as me, I understand where your coming from.
