Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review
With Amazing Spider-man 2 comes the time to see if Fox deserves to keep their rights to Spider-man. The first movie was very good, but this is the time to see if they deserve to hold on to the rights of the character or they should just hand him over back to Disney.
The movie kicks off with Spider-man doing what he does best, taking down the bad-guys, while having someplace else to be. This particular bad-guy is a Russian nut-job Aleksei Sytsevich (Paul Giamatti). He handles the crooks of course but then its off to graduation for him, High School is ending.
The recurring cast in this has gotten even better. Andrew Garfield gives one of the definitive portrayals of Spider-man/Peter Parker. He is charming but also pulls off all the wise-ass one liners but also is able to handle the painfully vulnerable moments. Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey is also awesome, not only is she beautiful, talented, a smart, competent female character but she has brilliant chemistry with Andrew Garfield. Garfield and Stone on their own are really good, but put them together and you get something amazing (pun intended).
I was happy with the costume in the last movie, but it would seem that others didn't respond too kindly to it because now we get a new one for this movie. And even though I liked the previous costume this is one of the greatest Spider-man costumes ever. Its colors are bright, its lines and design are simple and the eyes are big and white so they kind of look cartoony. This is the Spider-man costume.
We then meet Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx), a nerd working at Oscorp. He's a nerd that goes unoticed by everyone but one day Spider-man saves him from being hit by a car and he really thinks that this means something so much more than Spider-man just doing his job. Foxx plays the nerd well, he's given a greasy comb-over and thick glasses but he adds touches like nervous twitches and stammering. But on his birthday comes that day when he meets with his tragic act of fate that will transform him into a villain. He becomes the living battery Electro able to absorb and discharge electrical energy. So being that he's in New York that poses a problem. He has a cool look with glowing blue skin and he can zap to places, so he really puts Spider-man to the test, as well as that Foxx's voice gets put through a synthetic filter so it sounds disjointed, I liked it.
Later in the movie Harry Osborn returns home. Dane DeHaan plays Harry this time and what a treat of a performance this is. If you've seen DeHaan in Chronicle you know that he is a talent that you have to keep an eye on. Here he delivers a delicious performance of a kid that had his childhood taken by his uncaring and unkind father. You see and believe that he has been given little to no love in his life. As well as that he has the same genetic illness he inherited from his father, so he needs a cure, fast.
The music this time is handled by Hans Zimmer. The score is solid and everything but it suffers the same duduk kasus that the last movie did and that's I don't hear Spider-man in it. I don't listen to the score and either say "That's Spider-mans music!" or even be able to hum it after hearing it. To me Spider-man's music comes down to either, Danny Elfman's music from the Sam Raimi movies, or the opening theme from the 1994 animated series.
In the last movie the main theme was secrets, well that's still the theme in this movie but its pushed further. What secrets are buried deeper within the first secrets, you decide to keep a secret now how do you live with it or deal with knowing that the truth is being kept from you.
I have to wonder what is happening? There are so many sequels coming out, yes that's been a constant, but these are just as good or even better than the first movie. I hope this means that the time for good sequels is upon us and we can have a movie series that actually gets better and pushes the story and characters forward with each installment.
I am beginning to run out of things to say about good sequels and I couldn't be more happy about that. No doubt that if your a Spider-man fan you'll like this movie and if you liked the previous movie then I'll grantee you you'll enjoy the hell out of this movie.
